FAQs

Where are the fruit spreads made?

Our products are made in South West France, set against the fields and barns of a beautiful organic farm.

Do you use renewable energy?

Some of our friends ask us if we really walk the talk. We actually do. For instance, the roof of our production site is covered with solar pannels. Because we are in a region where the sun is so generous, we might as well use its energy to power all our electrical needs.

Are there any additives in the fruit spreads?

We only use what nature has to offer and nothing else. Organic fruits, organic unrefined sugar and organic agar-agar. Then it is up to our French jam crafters to work their magic.

Why does the label show EU/non-EU Agriculture? Aren't all ingredients from Europe?

Our organic fruits and agar-agar are all sourced in Europe. Our sugar comes from South America where they produce the finest organic and vegan unrefined sugar hence the "non-EU Agriculture". Unfortunately, there is no organic sugar in Europe at this time, but we are hopeful this will soon change unabling us to source closer to home.

How long does the fruit spread last once the jar is opened?

Once opened, keep the jar in the refrigerator. As we use less sugar, we recommend that you consume your jar within 2 weeks or 14 days or 336 hours! But we truly hope that by then, the jar is already at the recycling center or still at home being used for another purpose.

What is the total sugar content?

Our French tastebuds were desperate for more tasty products, they wanted the real thing! Pas de problème! We started by increasing our organic fruit content to 75%! Mais oui! Naturally, we then had very little room left for the organic unrefined sugar, about 25%. Adding this to the sugar naturally present in the fruits, we have a total sugar content of roughly 36%. Very délicieux!

Why Fruit Spread and not Jam?

By French law, you can only use the official jam appellation if you have a minimum fruit content of 35g per 100g of ingredients and a total sugar level of at least 55%. Therefore with its 75g fruit content and a total sugar level of 36g, THE FRENCHMAN is not a jam but a fruit spread. And that is exactly what it is! Merci beaucoup!

Can you guarantee the same texture from one production to the next?

We can guarantee that our organic fruits, unrefined sugar and agar-agar will always come from the same source, but as our fruit spreads are artisanally made, there could be some slight differences in texture. But rest assured, our products will always remain very délicieux and of the highest quality.

Aren't all fruit spreads vegan?

Great question! We also thought so, until we discovered that some sugar refineries use bone char to process sugar as a decolorizing filter, which allows the sugar cane to achieve its more recognised white color. THE FRENCHMAN does not use bone char to filter its organic sugar. The less we intervene in the process, the more authentic our product is.

I am gluten intolerant, can I have your fruit spreads?

Yes you can, our 3 ingredients (fruits, unrefined cane sugar, agar-agar) are all gluten free. Organic, vegan and gluten free... we've tried to make the most natural product nature has to offer and focus on TASTE.

Over time, does the colour of strawberry and raspberry remain vivid?

As we do not use any lemon juice or other antioxydants, but only fruits, sugar and agar-agar, there could be a natural oxydation on the surface of the fruit spread. This natural process has no impact on the taste and quality of our products. It just shows how natural our recipes are.

The raspberry fruit spread feels a bit acid, is it normal?

Absolument. The raspberry has a pH of around 3.4 which is similar to the orange. But do not worry as you won't feel the acidity with a generous layer of butter on your baguette, or in your morning muesli or porridge.

Some fruit spreads are a bit on the runny side, why is that?

It is all about the high fruit content and low sugar level. It could have been more compact would we have increased the sugar and/or increased the gelling agent which would have ultimately altered the taste... and THE FRENCHMAN definitely doesn't want that... obviously!

Will my French improve if I eat more of THE FRENCHMAN's products?

Hum... not sure about that... but please, do let us know if you notice an improvement in your language skills or any other changes in your behaviour. For the record, we do not add anything in our products that could enhance performance, just organic fruits and sugar.

Any tips on how to eat your fruit spreads?

Lots of tips actually, the most challenging is to resist. As we have chosen to seriousy increase our fruit content (75%) and therefore lowering the added sugar, our fruit spreads are very addictive. Baguettes, croissants, sourdough bread, muesli, yogurt, they all want a piece of THE FRENCHMAN. He is simply irresistible!

My jar is almost empty, what should I do?

When you have finished your jar, please don't just throw it away. This is the best part. No spoon nor fingers will remove what's left inside. But if you add oat, almond, soja, coco or milk up to about a third of the jar, screw the lid tightly back on and shake it like Tom Cruise, you will have made yourself a very délicieux smoothie. Pour it in a glass or drink it directly from the jar, then rinse it and put it in the recycling bin. Our glass jars, metallic lids and even our labels are 100% recyclable. Pas mal THE FRENCHMAN!

THE FRENCHMAN and la baguette, a forever duo?

Ha ha! Now we're talking! Did you know that every second, over 320 baguettes are made and eaten in France! That's 10 billion baguettes per year! A huge fan base for THE FRENCHMAN. Bravo!

I'd like to send some délicieux products to someone as a gift, and include a written note. Impossible?

As Napoleon used to say, "impossible is not French!". We can do everything you want, just give us your instructions, and we will proceed. Now, should you want to place an order to be shipped outside our atmosphere because you know the little green men would go crazy with so much fruits, sadly we cannot offer that service..., yet.
